Roberto Mónico earned his Ph.D. in Comparative Ethnic Studies from the University of Colorado, Boulder, emphasizing Critical Race Theory, Post-Colonial/Decolonial Theory, and Carceral Studies. His research interests focus on anti-drug policies, the history of law enforcement, and mass incarceration. Professor Mónico has worked with Underground Scholars Initiative, California Prison Focus, Prison Activist Resource Center, Project Rebound, and the Pelican Bay Bachelor's Program. He believes in amplifying the voices of communities that have endured hyper-policing and incarceration because their experiences are critical to empowering themselves and their communities. He is the advisor to the Critical Race, Gender, and Sexuality Studies student club, faculty lead for Creando Raíces, co-chair for the Ethnic Studies Council, and is on the central committee for the Diverse Male Scholar Initiative.
